Wall Light Hack | Install Wall Lights No Wiring Required!

I saw this hack online some time ago and was amazed that we could add wall lighting, even if there were no electrical connections. As soon as I saw it, I knew exactly where I wanted to add some ambience. Our Kitchen! Earlier in the year, we gave our kitchen a little refresh. We painted the tiles, switched out the handles and added some open shelving above our cooker (take a look on my Instagram account to see this mini transformation, all the clips are in my Kitchen Refresh Highlight).

As renters hardwiring was not an option for us, but making a few holes that we could fill in later was a win win! So we faked it and it turned out looking great!

Enough of me babbling lets get into this tutorial….

Hard wiring not an option? this hack is for you!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

B E F O R E

Step 1 | Measure

Disclaimer: We followed the instructions given with the wall lights we purchased, this may vary depending on the lights you have chose. Be sure to carefully follow the instructions given in your manual.

How high and how far apart you want your wall lights to be, is dependant on your wall space and preference.

For me I knew I wanted the wall lights to be the same distance as the open shelving brackets. I felt that placement would be balanced for the size of the shelves. In regards to height, I wanted the wall lights to be high enough, so that my art print would be able to fit on the shelf also.

I asked hubby to hold the wall light in place. Using my measuring tape, I measured how high it was and marked that point with a pencil. I marked where the top of the wall light was and where the bottom of the wall light stopped. From there I placed the mounting plate in the centre of the marked points (you can use a spirit level/laser level to ensure everything is straight). Then I marked two small dots in the designated screw holes of the mounting plate, so we could drill.

I repeated this method for the other wall light also ( if you guys need any clarification, send me a message and I would be happy to answer any questions).

Step 2 | Drill

Our walls are made of solid brick. So, we adjusted the drill setting and chose the drill bit suitable for brick walls. Please ensure you use the correct settings for the walls in your home (if you are unsure, check your drill manual, if one is provided).

TIP: Use masking tape and a folded-up piece of paper or a bag as a dust catcher. Because no one has time to be cleaning up all that dust after you have finished.

Once the holes were made the next step is easy, push in your wall plugs. Place your mounting plate on the wall and screw in the screws that were included with your wall light.

Once the mounting plate is attached, it is time to add the wall lights!

Step 3 | Puck Lights

I mentioned before that no hardwiring is required for this hack because, we will be using PUCK LIGHTS! These are great to give the effect of a light bulb. Be sure to purchase ones with a remote control. Especially if you want to place your wall light, in an area that you cannot manually turn off and on the light.

I brought my Puck Lights from amazon and they are battery operated. The Puck Light comes in a pack of 6 with 2 controls and adhesive stickers.

For this part of the hack, you will need your wall light and puck lights. Simply peel one side of the adhesive pad and stick it to your puck light. Then peel the other side and stick the puck light directly on top of the bulb socket, where you would normally screw in the bulb. Giving a little pressure to ensure it has adhered well.

TIP: Do not use the adhesive tape provided with the puck lights, they are not strong enough and will fall down. Talking from experience. I literally stuck them to the wall light and within 20mins they fell. I had to buy Velcro Tape from amazon to replace these. It has been a couple weeks now and I can report that it has not fallen at all!

Now we have our light source, we can finally put our wall light on the wall.

Step 4 | Install

We have arrived at the last step! The finally part is to grab your screw driver and screw on your wall light to the mounting plate.

If your wall light is adjustable, position it so the light shines where you need it. Now the moment has come to turn the lights on! Step back and enjoy the new look you have created!

I love how this turned out and it really completes this area in our kitchen so much. At night the ambience is everything!

Here is a short video showing how we did it. If you watch until the end, you will see the view at night.

Enjoy your new Lights !
