Small Hallway Transformation | Creating Impact With Black

Time for a New Look!

For the longest time our hallway has looked very plain. Apart from painting the walls and putting down new flooring, it was untouched. So, after many years of a bare room, I decided to refresh the space before the new year.

At first I was not sure what I was going to do, so I went on to Pinterest for some inspiration. I can always find interesting home designs there. I saved some images that caught my eye and looked around our hallway to see how I could incorporate this into our little hallway.

One thing I knew for sure I wanted was seating. Somewhere we could sit to put on our shoes. We were either leaning on the wall or as the girls would do, chunk themselves on the floor. I really wanted an assigned space to get ready to leave out. We have a small wall next to a storage cupboard that I thought would work well to create a seating area. There was an image on Pinterest that I thought would work well on this wall.

So hopefully my quick photoshop drawing gives you the vision lol. But if not let me explain. I wanted the feature wall to be black. Yes… I said black. This colour was met with a lot of reservation, my family thought black would make the hallway feel even smaller. But I knew it wouldn’t make it small but add depth because the plain white walls made the room very flat. So although everyone was like noooo! I went ahead with my idea.

Also as you can see I incorporated the picture shelf I saw on Pinterest. I thought it would be visually pleasing, situated above the bench. I loved that the inspo image used books to style the wall and not just your typical vase and vessels.

With the moodboard finalised it was time to commence the refresh.

The Paint colour used was by Dulux and it is called Rich Black. The finish I used was Silk. We had matt finish before and it attracted so much marks that were hard to clean off. So I decided to re-paint all the walls with a silk finish. Its much easier to wipe away marks (we have silk finish in our lounge).  The cream colour to our walls is Dulux Almond White.

Although I don’t particular like painting, it was relatively a quick task. we marked off the area we were painting with Frog Tape and did two coats of Rich Black. Leaving the required amount of time between each coat.

The few days later when hubby was free, he installed the shelves for me. I mapped out where I required them and he drilled the holes and fit the shelves. I made sure to calculate enough space for someone to sit comfortable, so they are not greeted with a hit in the back or head from a shelf.

Once this was complete it was on to my favourite part Styling! I have listed and linked all the items I purchased below (unfortunately some of the decorative accessories are now out of stock).

The Reveal

Ceiling Light // Bench // Cushion // Shelves // Coffee Table Book 1 // Coffee Table Book 2 // En Noir Print // Little Things Print // Black Woman Print // *Prints were a PR Product for a Instagram collaboration*

I absolutely love how it turned out, the black has really made an impact and breaks up the plain walls. My family appreciate having an area to get ready and it’s a talking point as you enter our flat. If anyone is hesitant to add black to their home this is your sign to try it out.

This is the first area I needed to complete in the hallway. The next is the main wall that needs some styling. Hoping to start it this month. I am thinking, a console table with a mirror. But I need to find something small enough to fit in our narrow hallway. Hopefully I can share what I am up to soon. Stay Tuned.
