bring dimension to a plain wall
Sometimes it can be difficult to decide, what to do to create a focal point in a room. This is exactly how I felt when it came to our Livingroom.
Although I had placed prints above our corner sofa, for some reason I felt something was still missing. Then I remembered a post that I had seen from another account on Instagram.
They posted an image of a show home, that drew my attention. The designer of the lounge panelled around a piece of art, it looked amazing. Now panelling was not what I wanted to do, but it gave me an idea that maybe, something like this could be achieved with good old Washi Tape.
what you will need:
- BLACK WASHI TAPE
- SPIRIT LEVEL OR LASER LEVEL
So I immediately went online to one of my go to stores Amazon and ordered Black Washi Tape.
When the tape arrived, I was not sure what I was going to do or how it would turn out. To be honest I just winged it. I peeled off the tape and began making lines. However I did know that I did not want the frame to be symmetrical. I intentionally made the left side closer to the prints and the right side farther away. I preferred that offset look.
Now I just eyeballed how straight the lines were, but if you want it to be precise, then you may want to use a Laser Level or a Spirit Level to measure out your lines. The Great thing about Washi Tape is that it is easy to remove and re-apply, so you don’t have to worry about making any mistakes.
renter Friendly Option for Decorating
I would also highly recommend Washi Tape to my fellow renters out there. If you have a landlord that is very particular about holes or damage the walls, then Washi Tape would be a great tool. It will create some dimension to a plain wall, although it does have other uses too. Have a search on google you will be surprised at how creative people get.
I am so happy with how this area looks now. It was so quick and simple but it made such a big impact to the room. I plan to experiment some more with Washi Tape. Until then I will be admiring this quick DIY creation.
If you have any questions, let me know.

Tips for Creating A frame Around Your Prints
- Ensure you are starting with a wiped clean and dry wall.
- Washi Tape is paint friendly, but you may want to do a stick and remove test on the wall first.
- Measure how high and wide you would like for your boarder to be.
- For a precise line I recommend using a spirit level or laser level
- Work slowly and use your finger to press the tape into the wall so it adheres smoothly.
- Don’t feel pressured for it to be perfect, I eyeballed my border and it turn out fine.
